MPLAB 8.15 contains release notes for an IDC 3 debugger.

Anything known about it?

Oops ICD 3 I meant of course.

Good news. Hopefully it will be faster for PIC24/dsPIC/PIC32 debugging. ICD 2 is barely usable for them.

The Digi-Key Team 3 Power Play contest seems to drop several hints about the new device. :)

Refer to here as well:
http://forum.microchip.com/tm.aspx?m=376021

Looks like ICD 2 but much faster (high speed USB + FPGA), variable target power just like PICkit 2, less features than Real-ICE.

So, ICD2 is going to be out, curious if my current ICD2 is broken, will they replace my broken ICD2 with an ICD3?

You wish.
ICD 3 is not a replacement to ICD 2. It is a new upgrade. Just like a PM3 is an upgrade of Promate II.

ICD 2 will be there to stay (at least for a while), it is good enough for PIC12/16/18.

They may replace your faulty ICD 2 with a PICkit 2 in the future.  Just kidding.

I noticed ICD3 has "RealICE" drivers located at it's drivers folder at 8.15, I suppose it is a stripped down version of it's big brother RealICE.

Maybe, but it add's at least one feature to the RealICE: It can supply the target-board with a variable supply-voltage (1.8V - 5.5V, if I remember a table correctly, which was posted in a meanwhile censored thread about ICD3)...

Yeah that's a usefull feature (if vdd of the target doesn't draw to much current).i just readed about it at ICD3 userguide now at the website of mc, ICD3 can power a target with 100mA retrieved from the USB.

100mA is the max USB current, so probably a 30~40mA to external board?
PICKit2 can also supply about 30~40mA to external board because itself consume about 50-60mA. This make it cannot afford power hunger chip like the dsPIC30F601xA, which easily takes up to 100mA at start at higher frequency.

The help file included on MPLAB IDE 8.15 says less than 100mA.

Hmm. Farnell don't have in stock at the moment. I wondered what the UK price would be, given the weak pound at the moment. Regards
