Compiler Licensing - I'm confused

Hi y'all,
I'm mainly confused because I can't find an explanation in words of one syllable covering all situations, so I have to search around and read between the lines to try and figure it out, but I can't be sure...

Secnario 1
I purchase the pro worktation and, during the following months, I destroy 3 computers one by one, installing and activating the license on each one in turn. At this point, will I have to purchase another workstation license for my new 4th computer?

Scenario 2
I puchased the pro workstation and several years later, I need to update the compiler to support the latest PIC that I want to use. I install the new version and perform activation of the license and - What will happen?
Would I need to puchase another worksation license or another HPA? Which one?

Thanks everybody
Alex

    1. Yes
    2. If the previous HPA has run out, you will need to buy another. Any versions installed while the HPA is valid are Pro versions, so install the HPA first, then the newer compiler version.

You do have a variant on this scenario, purchase the dongle license, then you can install the compiler on as many computers as you like, but the one with the dongle plugged in will have the pro license activated.

The dongles have been available at 40% off, the XC16 was last month, the XC8 the month before, and XC32 this month. I suspect these discounts will come around again as part of dev tool discounts.

What you don't get with the dongle is the HPA, you need to get that separately.

I had occasion to put to rest my 3rd+ computer and it complained when I went to register xc32 on the fourth.
A note to SW licensing resolved it, they reset the number so I could install on the fourth and it has happened since.
Computers do seem to become unusable as time goes on

Scenario 1: No, you don’t have to purchase another workstation license. However, you do need to email them and let them know one of the host IDs is no longer in use. They will remove it from the database.
