After installing 4.15, many projects fail with odd errors!

I installed 4.15 of MPLAB X and the wheels fell off!  A number of projects that were recently compiled on this machine with no changes under 3.65 now don't work, even if I try them in 3.65!  Since they complain of unknown errors, I don't even know what went wrong!  Some other projects still compile with either 3.65 or 4.15, so I don't know why these were broken.

Anyone have an insight as to what happened?  Here's the sample output from one of the failing projects.

Could be in printf or maybe a link error from a library.

    "%l"

    Replace with %lu or %li

No printing of any type in my projects, they're all embedded systems.  The bummer is now the older version also fails on these projects!  I'm stopped in my tracks, I knew I was screwing up when I installed this turkey, everything was working great before I upgraded!

My laptop didn't have any upgrade, and the same stuff still compiles on that machine, so installing 4.15 did the dirty work!

Nope, just a basic C program.  I suspect I may have to scrub all the MPLAB X versions off and install the older version again to fix this.  Obviously, something that came in with 4.15 screwed up 3.65, that hasn't happened to me before.

    Hi,

I use MPLAB X v4.15 for several months without issues

You do not need to uninstall any MPLAB X or XC compiler as they all install in directories which contain the version number.
Years of experience have tought me to always keep previous version (compiler / IDE) and install the new one. If any issue arise with new one just revert to previous version ;=)

did you import the previous MPLAB X settings when you installed v4.15 (I generally do not do it).

Could it be that your D: drive is a network drive ?
Maybe you want to compile a project on your C:\ drive to check if the issue is related to D:\ ?

You may also want to try this : http://microchipdeveloper.com/mplabx:persistence-data

    Regards

Remove spaces from file directories and names.
    1. D:/MicroChip/Super-Chuffer II'  rename TO D:/MicroChip/Super_Chuffer_II'

    2. Clear the cache

    3. the file extension is .c ?

I've done all of that, and yes it's a .C file.

Only different is that it supports PicKit 4.

Well... I fixed it.  I moved the projects over to my laptop, and all of them compiled just fine with an older version.  So...  I downloaded the old version and the version of XC8 I was using.  I scrubbed all of the Microchip stuff from the computer and the registry.  After a complete cleaning, I rebooted and installed MPLAB X 3.65 and XC8 1.38, the versions that were still on the laptop.

Everything compiles and links just fine now.

The dilemma is should I "shoot the dice" and install the latest versions again, that was about four-five hours of my life that I'll never get back, I don't care to repeat it!

Probably no, unless you are using pickit 4.

Uhh, no.  I have the ICD3, and I also have a PICKIT3 that I have in the laptop bag for "on the road" stuff.  However, that had nothing to do with my issues anyway.  Something got corrupted when I installed 4.15, and the only way to back it out was to nuke EVERYTHING and install over.

I'm back on 3.65 for a spell, as I'm still getting other errors with the configuration of 4.15, but at least it didn't nuke my 3.65 installation this time!

If it works then no point in going through that again.

I'm using v4.05 and it it still has the file bugs. i.e. new, rename, add, delete.
These tend to happen within libraries.

Yep, since 3.65 does what I need it to do, I think I'll wait until a more stable release comes out. ;)

How long should one wait for a stable release of MPLABX

    1. 6 Months
    2. 6 years
    3. 6 Decades
    4. Never

I have the latest version of MpLab X.
I have multiple versions of MpLab X installed and running side by side with no interference
I have multiple instances of the same version to debug two boards talking to each other.

Before the 4.15 debacle, I never had issues with having several versions loaded and functional, this is the first time the wheels fall off.  I have no idea what happened, but it was ugly!

FWIW, I did load 4.15 again, and for some reason it still fails to compile the exact same code that 3.65 can compile, so there's still issues.  At least it didn't nuke the 3.65 version, so I'm back in operation, but I don't understand why this release is so problematic!  The compile seems to go OK, then this error pops up at the end.  Compiling the EXACT SAME CODE with the SAME XC8 compiler runs to completion just fine.  I made a copy of the complete project tree and just pointed 4.15 at the copy.  Yes, I did use the IDE to copy the project as you should.

Once again the forum throws an error when I try to post this, so not only is MPLAB-X buggy, so it the MicroChip forum software!  From when I started using the PIC family before MPLAB-X, things have gone downhill with the development tools!

I would suggest recreating the project in the 4.15 environment taking only mainline.c from the original.
