I have persevered a little more with this project, for interest.  The current position is that I have modified the library files (I have not implemented some of the new functions as I do not need them) and analysed the register differences in a bit more detail (hence separate thread on the USART).  I would happily share a couple of word files with the analysis and comment on the library changes, if I could figure out how to do so on this platform.  Apologies for my incompetence...
I can certainly compile and build all my files, but do not yet have a hardware platform on which to test.  I hope to build a board with a 174 instead of a 170 and give it a go in the near future, but it depends on availability of time...  This would exercise serial, I2C and SPI, but not other functions.  Possibly RTCC as well.
I hope this is of interest...

Quick update - I have now had a chance to check through the 174's data sheet in more detail.  The wait state potential issue is more than countered by the cache module that this processor includes, which should give a significant performance improvement.

 
This was quoted too for the PIC32MK, but apparently SFR register access is excluded. I wasn't able to make a 120MHz PIC32 to outpace a dspic33epmu814, except when executing NOPs (I also ported portions of the perip libs)

Thank you for the additional clarification.  I suspect that it depends on the detail of the algorithms being performed; I have no hands-on experience with the MK range.  I like the robust and conservative lithography and fabrication process used on the MX range; slightly concerned that the 174 is on a different process...  My challenge is to access data from previous samples and calculate predictions, while maintaining an interrupt driven acquisition.
