Explorer USB Link Intermittent

I'm seeing intermittent operation ("connection failed") with MPLAB-X and my Explorer 16/32 board with a PIC24FJ64GB004 USB PIM loaded.  I notice this board uses an HID instead of the Microchip driver.  Has anyone else had this problem  or seen a solution?  Getting a better tool is on my wish list but the ICD3 is out of stock until April 5th....

Is the board getting all its power from the PC?
Connecting external power, or going via a powered hub can sometimes help.

This forum is mis-configured so it only works correctly if you access it via https protocol.
The Microchip website links to it using http protocol. Will they ever catch on?

Just put it on my windows based PC nd found the Device ID is invalid.  Sounds like my explorer somehow died.

    Hi,
How do you connect your EXPLORER1632 to your PC ?
    Does the debugger work ?
How did you develop the code inside the PIC24FJ64GB004 ?
Nb : ICD3 has been replaced by ICD4.
    regards

It could be a defective USB cable. I have found some that had intermittent connection from the connector shell to the shield, and some without any shield at all. Also some had such high resistance that setting the Vdd voltage from the PICkit to 3.5 V resulted in only 3.25 V at the target.

Thanks, it was an intermittent USB cable.  Really nice looking but not consistently functional cable. -T
