PicKit3 Detected in Pickit3 Programmer. No serial number in MPLAB-X 4.01

I have an Pickit3 that is detected in the Pickit3 application (see screenshots), but does not appear in IPE or MPLABX V 4.01.  I've tried switching the Pickit3 to MPLAB Mode in the Pickit3 application, but it does not show up.

What do I need to do to get my Pickit3 to work with MPLABX V4.01?

Picture 1, The ICD3 is selected, Click the Wrench of the Left and select you PICKit3.
Picture 2, Did you close Picture 3 before trying 2? Only of think can use it at a time.
Note The Firmware MplabX installs on the Pickit3 may stop it from working on Pick3 Programer.

I do not think you Need to use the Switcher App for a PICki3.

    Agree.

The installed Programmer software stopped it from working with MPLAB.
It must be reverted to MPLAB mode by the tools menu of the programmer software!

Posting images, links and code - workaround for restrictions.

Yes, I closed the Pickit3 tool before starting MPLABX.  Yes, I reverted the Pickit3 to MPLAB mode before starting MPLABX.

The Pickit3 simply will not show up in MPLABX.

    Hi,
Did you read MPLAB X release notes v4.01 related to Pickit3 ?
    =======================================================================

    6.1      Software/Hardware Conflicts

Some applications, plug-ins or widgets may take control of, or interfere with, the system provided HID USB driver, which can cause problems communicating with the PICkit 3. If you cannot connect to the PICkit 3, review the Task Manager for these types of programs and close them.
If you have a PICkit 3 that is a revision 7 or above, you must use the MPLAB X IDE or MPLAB IPE (Integrated Programming Environment) to load the PTG (Programmer-to-Go) image onto the PICkit 3. Previous revisions (6 and older) of the PICkit 3 work with MPLAB v8.
    =====================================================================
I am not sure what is the meaning of this...
Maybe if you reprogram a Pickit3 rev 7 or more with MPLAB v8 PTG this prevent it to be updated by MPLAB X ?

I tried the two links in the v4.01 Release Notes.
    http://www.microchip.com/forums/m614572-p2.aspx

    https://forums.ni.com/t5/Multifunction-DAQ/No-supported-devices-found/td-p/1856299/page/3

I rebooted into safe mode.  MLAPB and IPE didn't want to boot.  Rebooted into normal windows desktop and stopped all of the services that I thought might be interfering.  Which was Acronis, Corsair Utility Engine, and Dropbox.  I tried 5 different USB ports on my machine.

Getting MPLABX or IPE to load the PTG needs to be able see the Pickit3.  Those two applications cannot even detect the Pickit3.

I've attached a screenshot of the currently executing processes.  Is there anything in here I should kill?

Dumb question: Is the PICkit 3 supposed to use the Microsoft HID and USB Input Device drivers?  I'd post a screenshot, but the forums are acting up again.

    Yes.
On my Win 7 PC, it loads both those drivers when the PK3 is plugged in.

    Hi,
At this stage I would personally install a recent version of MPLAB X v3.xx like v3.65 (not v4.xx) on another PC and try to connect Pickit3 to see if it is detected.
If this does not work, install MPLAB v8.92 (old MPLAB version) and see what happens.
Alternately you write a support ticket to Microchip to see if they have any suggestion
    Regards

I did download and install MPLAB v8.92, and it had not trouble detecting the pickit 3.  It detected the firmware was out of date.

I'll try a different PC with an older version of MPLAB X.

Unfortunately for any future Google hits, I was completely unable to resolve this problem.  I used MPLABX to compile the project, then downloaded it using the PICKIT-3 tool.  It was a real hair-puller trying to work through problems without a debugger.  If I had a choice on this project, I would have NEVER chosen Microchip from past experiences.  Unfortunately, the board was already built with a PIC and I didn't have much choice.  Thankfully, that project is over and done with, and I can go back to using big-boy development tools that actually work.

Though the PicKit 3 is a fine tool I do not know that I would place it i the same class as a Real ICE.

For Most People the ICD3 / ICD4 is all you need.
But in this case i doubt it is the Debugger.  It is the IDE(s) or a bad installation.

I do agree, getting the PicKit 3 up is a challenge for some.
