MPLAB X IDE v4.01 not installing - hangs

I've tried several times today to run the MPLABX-v4.01-windows-installer.exe. It runs, but hangs and never recovers. 
 
This is on Windows 10, Version 1703, build 15063.608
 
It hangs when it gets to "Installing  Please wait while Setup installs MPLAB X IDE v4.01 on your computer"  It shows zero percent progress in the progress bar. Red X does not close the app (red flag for the development team there). I had to kill the process with Task Manager.

    Having exactly the same problem as the original post, same version and build, 64bit Windows 10 Pro. The thread suggested above does not appear to be relevant, the installer hangs at the start of the Installing screen, no progress is shown. Any solutions yet?
     
    Not best pleased having just bought an ICD4, but still can't update MPLAB X to be able to use it.

    This issue has been resolved for me at least.
     
    The installer hangs due to a logged error message
    "Could not find registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microchip\MPLAB IDE InstallDir. Setting variable mplab8installed to empty value". They were unable to explain this as no such registry key exists on their various trial IDE machines. The only other Microchip software installed since new on my machine was MPLABX v3.61.
     
    The suggestion from Microchip support was to create a new user with administrator rights and re-install from there. This worked for me.
