Your question is not clear, Did you set correctly your chip when starting a new project?
Can you post the full error message?

Are you using it in MPLabX, or on the command line?

The error message also implies that XC8 is running in C18 compatibility mode, so there's something screwy in your setup.

Did you start this project from scratch, or import an old project?

Please post your complete build log so we can see how it is invoking the compiler.

This indicates that yes, you ARE using compatibility mode

Executing: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microchip\xc8\v1.43\bin\mcc18.exe" -p=18F4550 "I2C_Source_File.c" -fo="I2C_Source_File.o" -Ou- -Ot- -Ob- -Op- -Or- -Od- -Opa-

It would be using xc8.exe if it was in native mode.

Edit your project properties, and change the "Compiler Toolchain" from "C18" to "XC8".

There is no option for selecting XC8 in MPLAB

Are you using MPLAB8, rather than MPLABX?
XC8 has not fully supported MPLAB8 since version 1.34.
See: How to install XC8 version 1.34 and later into MPLAB8.
