Is ICD 4 about to be released soon?

Hi all,

I'm thinking about upgrading from my pickit 3 to an ICD 3. Today I stumbled upon this thread:
http://www.microchip.com/forums/m986590.aspx
discussing the possibility of an ICD 4 release. Does anyone have any more info on this (release date, functionality differences etc)

Kind regards / Henrik

Well, hard to say, but they updated microchipdeveloper, so perhaps not that long....
specs and release would be really great to know...

    This was interesting :-)

I think I will hold off a bit on the purchase... even though I guess the ICD3 will still be supported for quite some time

I suppose my ICD2 is not good for much more than a hockey puck or snuff box. It's been quite a few years since I last used it, and all my recent projects have five-pin inline ICD header holes for the PICkit3. I could buy or make an adapter, I suppose.

It's hard to find what devices are still supported by ICD2, and apparently it won't work with MPLABX. Some info:

The ICD4 was discussed at last year's (2106) MASTERs conference as if it were coming out at any time.  Here were are nearly a year later and still no ICD4.  If you can wait a few weeks, I suggest waiting to see what is said at this year's MASTERs conference (coming up the week of 14 August).

The ICD2 supports what ever MPlab 8.92 supports.  BUT you need the adapter to program 8 volt Vpp part. It has a fixed 12V Vpp. (or you can make that adapter too)
The ICD is said to have worked on early versions of MplabX.  (for all the use that is)

"No firmware download delays incurred when switching devices".

That seems to be the major functional difference.

    Wonder it it's a clone of a Segger J-Link?

Well, the RJ-11 ICSP-Connector is now a RJ-45 Connector, but the RJ-11 Cable can still be used.
And there is a 9V Power supply plug. Nice. Wondering how much current the ICD4 can supply.

Don't think so. It's more an updatet ICD3 with JTAG interface. Still got a PIC32 and a FPGA....
But I don't think it is possible to update ICD3 Hardware to ICD4, too many differences...

Up to 1A, according to the user guide linked above.

A PIC32C, according to the same user guide...I'm sure I heard of the ICD4 before the Atmel aquisition...

Using a RJ11 plug into a RJ45 socket can push pins 1 and 8 too much. They might not return to their original position. Maybe the two sockets on the ICD4 would be a better solution?

    Edit:
By the way there are also two videos about ICD4 on their Vimeo account https://vimeo.com/user62889984 , one of them unboxing the ICD4...

    Yes, or using an adapter.

Well, some features are nice, but putting none power supply in the box next to an RJ-adapter is poor.
Interesting if atmegas could be programmed with ICD4. If there will be a pickit 4?
Buts lets see. Not every pic is today supported by ICD4. Lets wait how long ICD3 is supported and updated.

There is a separate ICD4 Forum.

    Estimated shipping date 4-sept :
    http://www.microchipdirect.com/ProductDetails.aspx?Catalog=BuyMicrochip&Category=Cat4_SubCat5&mid=13&treeid=6

Now showing Sep 18.  Likely reflects pre-orders.  I think I saw an August date earlier, but won't swear to it.
