Debugging using MPLABXpress IDE and MPLABXpress evaluation board

Hi All,
I have downloaded the MPLABXpress USB bridge but I can't connect to it from the IDE. Same situation with the programming tool. Both are declared as 'not connected' in tabs at the bottom of the IDE window. My Java is up to date.
However the external programmer is not an issue as I use drag and drop programming of the hex file from the downloads folder to the Xpress folder, and that works just fine.
But do I need the usb bridge for debugging the actual connected board, and if so how to connect to it ?
Or is debugging only in simulation mode possible with MPLABXpress ?
I have searched this forum and the MPLABXpress documentation and not found a definitive answer. To repeat -
is the usb bridge needed for actual device debugging or not , and how to connect it, or is only simulation debugging possible.
I would really like to know if only to stop attempting what might be simply impossible.
By the way I have tried different browsers.
